While many of our students follow the standardized programs of study, we believe that it is a value added service to develop tailor suited programs for our clients.

You can select either English or French as your co-op program focus. The Co-op program is designed to encourage and challenge you to develop workplace specific communication abilities. Our program requires that work experience is an essential part of your study. By joining our school you are participating in a co-op program and we will assist you to secure your one year study and work permit. There are 2 language programming streams under the category of Co-op Programs:

Full-Time Study and Co-op English Language Program

This program allows students to develop their English skills using cooperative learning system with a classroom team and instructor versus the outdated rote learning system of having a teacher making you simply memorize. Students benefit through a combination of English classes and paid or unpaid work experience. Most jobs are entry level service jobs in the hospitality, retail, tourism, and recreation industry but jobs may also be high paying white collar positions. The jobs allow students to take what they have learned in the course curriculum and put it into practice in the work place. Students study English for as much time as they spend in the work placement.

Level 1

Entry Level Workplace English

Duration: 12 months

Curriculum is structured around the student completing an evaluation of their employer's customer and internal communication needs. A curriculum addressing grammar, vocabulary, listening, pronunciation, reading and writing skills will be completed by the student.

Level 2

Intermediate Workplace English

Duration: 12 months

Level 3

Advanced Workplace English

Duration: 12 months

Work Authorization for Co-op Programs

Foreign students who wish to participate in the Sea-to-Sky Co-op program will apply to SSILS and, once issued an acceptance letter from the school, will apply for a study permit and a co-op work permit for the length of time they are registered and actively learning at SSILS. A SSILS intake officer will assist in the preparation of study permit and co-op work permit paperwork for accepted students to present to Canadian immigration authorities.

Failure to Complete Curriculum or Pay Fees

Students who register in the co-op program as a means to enter Canada without the intention of studying, who fail to pay tuition on schedule, or who decide to work without completing the study portion of the program will have their co-op permit cancelled and Citizenship and Immigration Canada will be updated by the school immediately. In this case the permitting will no longer be valid and CIC will enter the students' information into their data base making future immigration permitting for Canada difficult for the fraudulent student to achieve. CIC is under recent pressure to ensure co-op students are conducting themselves per the terms of their school's curriculum. Depending on the circumstances of the student's violation of their agreement with SSILS, Canada Border Service Agency's Inland Enforcement office may be provided the student's information to affect removal.

Accommodations

Foreign students will have to secure their own living accommodations.

Work Placement

Students with valid work permits must secure a work placement while registered in co-op language programming with our school. In most cases SSILS students have already identified who their co-op employer will be. For those who have not, SSILS staff will prepare you to make an application to eligible local employers.

To be eligible for the Study and Co-op Language Program, students are required to have a Study and Work Permit issued concurrently.  Potential co-op employers must be satisfied that the student holds a valid Work Permit before they will agree to the placement.  Work placement is an essential and integral component of the program of study and is required for successful completion of the course.  In the first term, students will identify and interview with their preferred co-op work employer.
